Please share a memory of Joseph to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joseph "Joe" Zimmerman, age 70, passed away suddenly on June 2, 2025.
Joe was the eldest child of David and Martha Zimmerman, born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1954.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Zimmerman, son, Christopher Zimmerman; father, David Zimmerman, and sister, Karen (Doug) Quinn. He was predeceased by his mother, Martha (Weber) Zimmerman and brother, Mark Zimmerman.
After graduating from Candor High School in 1972, Joe's plans to pursue a career in forestry were interrupted by the receipt of a draft notice. Joe decided to enlist and proceeded to serve nine years in the United States Air Force. Joe's young family grew during his service at Chanute AFB, Illinois; Loring AFB, Maine; Carswell AFB, Texas, and Griffis AFB, New York. At the conclusion of Joe's military service, he started his career at IBM on January 4, 1982. Throughout his 34 year tenure at IBM, Loral and Lockheed Martin, Joe exceled at positions in product test engineering and management, and manufacturing management including responsibility for a stand-alone facility in Apalachin, NY and numerous manufacturing departments in Owego, NY. Joe had a great deal of pride in the teams he supported and developed many lasting relationships with colleagues throughout his career. Joe spoke fondly of the wonderful people who crossed his path professionally.
Joe appreciated a great sense of humor and could often be counted on for witty banter and a good laugh. He enjoyed time outdoors, cooking over campfires, and traveling to see new places wherever the road took him. He was very interested in re-tracing the steps of his ancestors through familial research, from their journey and initial settlement in America forward. His efforts resulted in the creation of an incredible, comprehensive depiction of the Zimmerman family tree. Joe cared deeply for those close to him; the sharing of his love, thoughts, journeys and life lessons will be greatly missed.
To honor Joe's life, the family will be holding a private military burial.
