Mary Lou Surmik Obituary

Mary Lou Surmik, 77, unexpectedly passed away in her home on Sunday, September 7, 2025. Mary Lou was predeceased by her beloved husband, William (Bill) Surmik; her parents, Albert and Margaret Quackenbush; sister, Barbara Quackenbush. Mary Lou is survived by her three children, Michelle Dunda, Brian Surmik, Christopher Surmik; her sister, Christine Olson; grandchildren; a niece, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.


A proud member of the Vestal High School, Class of 1966, Mary Lou cherished her time going to lunch and having game days with them. She began her career at IBM and later retired from Catholic Charities. She volunteered at CHOW and the soup kitchen. Mary Lou treasured spending time with her beloved husband, Bill, at car shows, proudly showcasing their Corvettes. She was a dedicated member of the Southern Tier Mother of Twins Club, attending 30 NY State MOTC Conventions, alongside her longtime friend, Shirley Savage. The two shared many memorable moments and adventures. Her membership sparked her love for collecting turtles "Are You a Turtle?". Mary Lou also had a passion for traveling and shared many trips together with her daughter, Michelle and grandchildren. She enjoyed hosting her "Tuesday Ladies' Card Party" at her house, loved painting ceramics, attending jewelry parties and had a host of other activities she enjoyed, even up until last week. We mustn't overlook that she was an exceptional dog sitter for, Stacy girl, and adored her playful cat, Holly Bell. She had a profound love for life, her time spent with her grandchildren, family, and friends.


The family will receive friends Friday, September 19, 2025 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. with memorial services immediately following at 5:00 p.m. at the Nimmonsburg United Methodist Church, 918 Upper Front Street, Binghamton, NY.
