In her memory and with love, today we share the obituary of my husband's mother, Maris Ann Patterson. While it outlines the milestones of her life, it doesn't fully capture the depth of who she was.
Maris will always be remembered for her sharp intellect, strong will, independent and very adventurous spirit & her unique way that she found joy in life. She had a deep appreciation for horses and their strength and beauty. An avid reader, she could spend hours sipping one of her many cups of coffee immersed in a book always informed and thoughtful in conversation. She especially enjoyed classic western films and the history and landscapes they portrayed.
Her trips to Las Vegas were carefully planned – lists in hand, ready to make the most of every moment. She was steady, principled and uniquely herself. She was proud of her sons, and loved every opportunity to show off the pictures she took of them and with them to her friends when she returned from her visits. While she may not have been outwardly sentimental, her presence and perspective left a lasting impression.
Maris approached life with curiosity and intention, always seeking something new to read, learn, or experience. Her presence brought warmth to those closest to her, and her memory will live on through the stories and laughter she shared.
We hold her memory with respect, and with most gratitude we would like to give special thanks to her brother, Stuart and her sister-in-law, Alta, for all their dedication and unwavering support they gave her in her final years.
Maris was born in Endicott, New York, to the late Albert and Gertrude (Merkenschlager) Patterson. Along with her parents, Maris was predeceased by her two brothers, Ronald Patterson, Christopher Patterson; brother-in-law, Edward R. Williams. She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Tobias and Erin Elefante, Sean and Michelle Elefante; grandson, Zachary; granddaughter, Kelsa; six greatgrandchildren; sister, Andrea Williams; brother and sister in law, Stuart and Alta Patterson; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be held Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hope Cemetery, Newark Valley, NY, with the Rev. Phil Jordan officiating.
