Roger William Westgate Obituary

Roger William Westgate, age 92, of Candor, New York, went peacefully to God's heavenly home on Sunday, March 29, 2026. He was surrounded by his loving family in the log home he built in the 70's. He is survived by his wife Georgia of 71years, sons Michael (Anita), Dan (Kathleen), David (Mary), 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Roger was a long-time member of the Allen Memorial Baptist Church in Candor and served in many building projects with the Trustee Board over the years. He served 4 years in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and later earned his BA in Industrial Arts. His IBM career spanned 29+ years. He served on the Candor School Board, Candor Town Planning Board, Candor-Spencer Lions' Club, Candor Historical Society, Vestal High School 50+ Club, and the Charles H. Bassett Youth Foundation. He received the 2020 Candor Community Services Citizens of the Year Award, as well as the Lions Melvin Jones Fellow Award.

After family, Roger's main joy was wood carving, and mentoring many others. His skills improved to the point that he was able to compete in the Ward Foundation World Championship Carving Show and took many ribbons. He formed the Catatonk Valley Woodcarving Club in 1988. The Club has been holding annual shows in October, which will certainly continue to encourage young and old alike to try out this art!

At his request, there will be a family-only graveside military service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making gifts to the Allen Memorial Baptist Church, 8 Church Street, Candor, NY 13743 or online at https:\\ambccandor.com and at the top of page, click on "Give."
