Nancy Louise McGavin Obituary
Nancy Louise McGavin, 78, of Owego, NY, passed away peacefully at Robert Packer with her daughters by her side on 05/30/2026.
Born on 12/13/1947 in Binghamton, NY, Nancy was the beloved daughter of Ambrose and Doris McGavin. Nancy attended St. Patricks School up until 8th grade and graduated from Owego Free Academy.
Nancy was a strong-willed and deeply faithful woman. She cherished her Roman Catholic Faith. She continued to be devoted to the Lord throughout her life, looking to Him in times of joy and hardship.
Nancy was a determined and resilient woman. She was never afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what she believed in. Her family knew they could always count on her to speak the truth and lead them in the right direction.
Family was Nancy's everything. Her entire life she was surrounded by family. She always tried to put family first. Her greatest joy was being involved with her families lives. Nancy was famously the "go-to babysitter" for her grandchildren. As they grew up, Nancy was a stable, loving presence in their lives. Nancy would always bring gifts for her family members as a way of showing them how much she cared and was thinking of them. In many ways, she provided her family members a constant source of care, support, and guidance. She captured so many of those moments through photographs, which will be forever treasured by her family. Her love will never be forgotten and will live on for eternity.
Intelligence was one of Nancy's strong suits. Nancy was a dedicated Clinical Social Worker. She advocated and for others lives and for many years was an art therapist. She graduated with her Masters of Social Work at Marywood University. She cared deeply about social issues and was the voice for those who were voiceless.
Her legacy is one of resilience, courage, faith, and love. She will be remembered for her big heart, her passion for social justice, her love of reading, and her intelligence. Her family adored and cared for her until the very end.
She is predeceased by her mother, Doris McGavin, father, Ambrose McGavin, brother, Steven McGavin and sister, Nila McGavin. She is survived by her sister Nora M. Schumacher (John), her daughters Megan Givens (David), and Erin Evans (Jonathan), her neice, Osee Nelli, and nephew, Jeb Schumacher (Alexis). Her grandchildren Dustin Zimmer (Ashley), Caitlyn Bailey (Nicholas), Rebecca Simons (Noah), Madeline Evans, Sierra Garvey (Jacob), Carol-leigh Givens (Tyler), and Nicole Root (Dan). She was also loved by her great nieces and nephews Gemma, Gavin, Quinn and Kennedy and her great grandchildren David, Jack, Noah, and Damon.
Nancy will be deeply missed and forever loved.
The family greatly appreciates the workers at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital who made Nancy comfortable, cared for, and never alone during her last moments.
