Obituary of James Houghton Welsh

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1) James Houghton Welsh, Jr. 83, passed away peacefully with his wife and children by his side on May 10, 2017. He was born on February 24, 1934 in Buffalo, NY to the late James and Isabel Welsh (Diehl). A proud Nittany Lion fan, Jim graduated from Penn State University in 1956 and began a life long career as an electrical engineer with IBM Owego. In his first retirement, he ran a successful coffee house “Awakenings” with his wife Teddie and daughter Sue. Jim took great pleasure in arranging monthly musical events at Awakenings. After his second retirement from Awakenings, Jim enjoyed time with his family and friends at his cottage on Seneca Lake. Jim was an avid golfer, loved fishing, and was a wonderful caregiver to his two best furry friends Bobby and Georgie. But most of all, he loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Theodora (Teddie) Welsh (Weaver) of Owego, sons Christopher J. Welsh and Maria Wackett of Binghamton and Michael A. Welsh and Margaret L. Welsh (Lee) of Cooperstown, NY, daughter Suzanne M. Munroe (Welsh) and Charles Munroe of Owego, and grandchildren Trevor Welsh of Cleveland, OH, Sarah Mansfield (Good) of Seattle, WA, Theresa Lepkowski of Owego, Mark Lepkowski of Owego, and James Lepkowski and Jenny Li of Brooklyn, NY. Jim was pre-deceased by his grandson Jared Good. At Jim’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory can be made to Stray Haven Humane Society, 194 Shepard Rd, Waverly, NY 14892, www.strayhavenspca.org.  Condolences may be made to Jim’s family at www.emfaheyfuneralhome.com.
