Upon graduation from Duryea High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During World War II George served as an airplane mechanic stationed in South Florida. Upon completion of his service, he returned to Duryea and on February 28, 1948 he married the love of his life Jane Hughes Stahl Mac Donald. Jane and George shared a loving marriage for 72 years. She predeceased him on November 11, 2020. He was the proud father of seven children, 20 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. His children are: Margaret (Peg) Ward (Greg) of Verona, New York; Thomas Mac Donald of Constable, New York, David Mac Donald (Lohrie) of Spencer, New York; Gregory Mac Donald of Penn Yan, New York; and daughters Jennifer Wildenstein (Dale); Carol Kwiatkowski, and Amy Lord (Patrick) all of Owego. He is survived by one sister-in-law, Nancy Lane of Moosic, Pennsylvania.
George was a 60 year member of the First Presbyterian Union Church in Owego where he served as an Elder. For many years he was the Chairman of the Property Committee and spent countless hours caring for his beloved church. This past summer he was awarded a sixty year member certificate from the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Candor American Legion.
George retired from IBM in Owego in 1988 where he was a machinist and inspector. He was proud of the part he played in many Apollo space missions during his 27 years of employment. Upon retirement Jane and George spent time traveling the country and visiting their family members throughout New York State, attending horse pulls, and wood shows in their beloved camper.
The family wishes to thank the staff at UHS Owego and Lourdes Hospice for their care and concern. Funeral services will be private due to the current pandemic. Remembrances in George's honor may be sent to the Mount Olive Masonic Lodge #290 at 240 Michigan Hollow Road, Spencer, New York 14883 or the First Presbyterian Union Church, PO Box 355, 111 Temple Street, Owego, New York 13827.
