Obituary of Joan Marie Basel

Joan Marie Basel, of Owego, NY, relaxed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 18, 2022, after an extended illness. She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, George A. Basel; four children, John (Julieanne) Basel, Julie (Matthew) Monell, Jeanne (Peter) Leget, Thomas (Julie) Basel; eight grandchildren, Shelby and Paige Monell, Craig and Kevin Basel, Gabrielle and Grace Leget, Leah and Ryan Basel; three great-grandchildren, Allys, Nolan, and Elaina Basel. Joan was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred and Noel Chandler. Joan was born, May 29, 1938 in Queens, NY. She became an accomplished dancer, performing jazz, ballet, and tap from early childhood until her early 20's. She graduated from Maryvale University in 1959. She was introduced to the love of her life, George, in 1960, and they quickly became inseparable. Married in 1962, they eventually settled in Campville, NY and raised their four children. Joan was a faithful servant of the Lord, a true believer in prayer, and her love for all was unconditional. Joan was deeply involved in the early development of Tioga County Rural Ministry and worked tirelessly there for many years. She was a very talented artist and could often be seen creating her next masterpiece. Joan's inner beauty and loving way was something that shined brightly and was easy to see by all. She was a real sweetheart and a very special lady. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 300 Main St., Owego, NY. Burial will follow in the Broadway Cemetery, Owego, New York. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Owego, NY.
