Obituary of Martin William Murphy

Please share a memory of Martin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Martin W. Murphy of Owego, NY died at home, with family by his side, on Monday, August 14, 2023. He was eighty years old. Marty lived life honestly, guiding his family through triumphs and challenges with a steady hand. He was quick to laugh and lend a helping hand. Above all, he loved his family. Marty grew up in Yorkville, NY, the son of the late Jane and William Murphy, and big brother to Bill (Frank Antonelli), Michael (Leslie), Patty (Steve DeRosa), and his late sister, Timmy (Joe Maggi). He happily followed the joys of his nieces and nephews and their growing families. He met Patricia Fassett Murphy, the love of his life, while a student at SUNY Cortland. They were married in 1966 and walked side-by-side for 57 years. Marty and Pat settled in Owego, NY and taught in the Owego Apalachin Central School District. Marty became a guidance counselor, first in Newark Valley and later at Vestal Senior High School. In the summer, he painted houses. Marty coached little league baseball and soccer and was a proud volunteer with the Owego Emergency Squad. Marty and Pat raised eight children: Erin (Edward Ripic), Timothy, Shannon, Brendan (Heather Murphy), Meghan (Vincent Capozzi), Colin, Ryan (Lindsay Knotts), and Daniel. Marty was a patient and loving father, a constant support to his children. He took his role as "G-Pa" to twelve grandchildren seriously, enjoying "sipping time" on the back porch with Jonathan and Ethan Ripic. The 4H projects and creative accomplishments of Eoghan, Clara, Seamus, Macson and Oliver Murphy brought great joy. When Genevieve, Ronan, and Emmeline Capozzi were in town, his Mickey Mouse pancakes were ready to serve. And he made sure to call Wren Frances and Sylvie Knotts Murphy almost daily. A ride in the tractor with G-Pa was a rite of passage for all the grandchildren. Marty enjoyed tennis and golfing with a close group of buddies. He loved woodworking, reading, gardening, rocking on the back porch, and traveling – always with Pat by his side. We will miss him terribly. Thank you to the nurses and doctors at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, and Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA, as well as the Lourdes Hospice nurses, and all his friends for their support. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 21, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Council, 701 W. Main Street, Endicott, NY.
