Obituary of Elwood Louis Hunter Jr.

Elwood L. Hunter, Jr. 80, of Owego, NY, died peacefully, October 19, 2023 at the Robert Packer Hospital with his two children by his side. Elwood was born July 19, 1943 in Waverly, New York to the late Elwood L. and Katherine (Johnson) Hunter. Along with his parents, Elwood was predeceased by two brothers, Floyd Haggerty, Richard Haggerty; sister, Angeline Haggerty. Elwood is survived by his beloved children, Lisa Hunter, Lonnie and his wife, Cheryl Hunter; his fury grand-dogs, Sunny and Gracelyn; sister and brother-in-law, Kay and George Gore; brother and sister-in-law, John "Wally" and Patty Haggerty; several nieces, nephews and dear friends. Elwood graduated from Sayre High School, Class of 1961. In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing softball and volleyball, but especially his convertible Chevy's. He was an excellent bowler up until age 75. Elwood was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and worked as an electronic engineer for IBM (1966-1996) and Lockheed Martin (1996- until retirement in 1999). He was a member of the American Legion Post #401, BPOE Elks Lodge #1039, Owego Moose Lodge #1595 (Past Governor). In his later years, you would find him just about every weekday morning at The Parkview with "The Coffee Club." Afterwards, you could usually bet on him heading to the Tioga Downs Casino for some lunch and slot machines. His greatest joys in life were his kids, family, friends, and his love of his "hill".
