Obituary of Oscar Lee Powell Jr.

Oscar L. Powell Jr., 70, of Endicott, NY, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2024, serenely at home. Oscar was born March 24, 1953 in Binghamton, NY. to the late Oscar L. Powell and Margie A. Fields. Oscar is survived by the love of his life for 45 years, Cynthia Powell, who was by his side continuously; his six siblings; Bernadette Meeks, Amantha Powell, Guydell Powell, Joan Glover, Vaundelle Glover, Tonya Soyke; two step-children, Johynnie McDowell, Jenica Easterling; five grandchildren; two family icons, Uncle, Walter Fields, aunt, Saundra Fields; Along with a legion of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins and in-laws. The formative years Oscar was endowed with exceptional abilities. In 1955, at the age of three, he gave a stellar recitation of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clark Moore, on Christmas Day, at the Beautiful Plain Baptist Church in Broome County. Attendees had been proud to proclaim that Oscar never made a single error delivering the speech. At age six, he could identify electrical problems on various components and devices, repair and replace the wiring. During adolescence he would build, from scratch, his own turntable and provide local entertainment as a disc jockey. The transitional period, age 26, he would work with his father in the construction business. Subsequently, Oscar would land his dream job with IBM. Oscar loved humor and ideas which was evident in those spare moments he enjoyed with his cousin, Sean, mentoring and reminiscing with nephews, Trozell and Verelle. Oscar will be sorely missed. The family will receive friends Friday, March 22, 2024 from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. with funeral services immediately following at 2:00 p.m. at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 14 Park St., Owego, NY with the Rev. Vera Boyd, officiating.
