John T. Neary, of Owego passed away on Sunday, July 5th, 2015. John was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Louise (Marsden) Neary; his infant daughter, Karen Neary; sister, Patricia Velte. John leaves behind his loving wife of 59 years, Joan (Serafino) Neary; son, Thomas Neary and his partner, Jorge Souza; son, James and his wife, Melissa and their children, Katharine and Kristen; daughter, Nancy (Neary) Leahy and her husband, John and their children, Dennis and Mary; three nieces. Upon graduating from Waterloo High School in 1951, John spent four years serving in the U.S. Navy. After returning to civilian life, he was employed as a telephone lineman and attended Auburn Community College for two years. John accepted a position as a mechanical designer at the Highspeed Check Weigher Company in Ithaca, NY where he remained until 1966. He then became an employee for IBM – Owego, NY. John worked in an Avionics Test Equipment Mechanical Design Department that he eventually managed. He retired from IBM in 1992 after 26 years of service. John was a member of Saint Patrick’s Church in Owego, NY and a long time member of the Owego Elks Lodge. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church, 35 Center St., Waterloo, NY. Burial will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in John’s memory to the Tioga County Rural Ministry, 143 North Avenue, Owego, NY 13827.
