Obituary of Helen Maureen C. Merrill

Helen “Maureen” C. Merrill, 78, of Owego passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at Riverview Manor. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, William and Margaret O’Connor Clancy; and brother, Lt. William Clancy, Jr. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 55 years, Robert L. Merrill; children, Erin Merrill and Susan St. Louis of Corning, Clancy (Jennifer) Merrill of Kansas City, KS, and Daren (Cindy) Merrill of Owego; sister, Joan (Jim) Clingingsmith of IL, grandchildren, Clancy Jr, Madison, Mackey, Rachel, Emily, and Robert; and special cousins, nieces and nephews. She was a graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA were she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree. Maureen was a teacher on Long Island and here in Owego at OACSD and St. Patrick’s School. She worked at Cornucopia in Endicott before she owned and operated The Wooley Bear Fabrics & Yarn in Owego for many years. She enjoyed, as well as taught, knitting, quilting, painting and embroidery. Maureen was a devout member of St. Patrick’s Church and a member of the Rosary Altar Society. Maureen and Bob enjoyed many winters with friends on Jekyll Island, GA. She was an active member of the Jekyll Island Arts Association. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 from 4 to 7 PM at Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Owego. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick’s Church, 300 Main St., Owego with Rev. Peter Van Lieshout officiating. The family would like to thank Dr. David Kwiatkowski and the staff at Riverview Manor for the excellent care over the past few years.
