Obituary of C. Donald Munroe

Don Munroe, 97, born in 1918 in his family home in Owego, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2016. Don attended St. Patrick’s School, Owego Free Academy and graduated from the University of North Carolina. Don enlisted in the Army Air Corp in January 1942 and received his wings on November 10th 1942 in Moultrie, GA. Don was in the 79th Fighter group – 85th squadron with 33 missions. He flew the P-40 Warhawk in combat providing close support for the British 8th Army in North Africa. In 1952, Don married Suzanne McCormick and they raised nine children; Maryanne (Munroe) and Marc Lyons, Charlie and Sue Munroe, Patrick and Frances Munroe, Kathleen (Munroe) and Dale Breese, Suzanne (Munroe) and Kevin Mathers, CeCe Munroe, Margaret (Munroe) and Ed Perrotte, John Munroe and Tom Munroe; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Don retired from Security Mutual in 1982 after 30 years of service as manager of agents accounts. Don was past president of the United Way, life member and Past Exalted Ruler of BPOE 1039, life member of the American Legion Post 401 and their accountant for 50 years. Don was a devoted member and served as an usher at St. Patrick’s Church for 55 years. Don loved his wife, Sue and she loved him. His entire life incorporated his love of family, his Catholic faith, UNC, the Air Corp and golf. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 300 Main St., Owego.
