Obituary of Eleanor Ruth Reed

Eleanor Czarniecki Reed, 100, of Candor, NY passed away on October 1, 2020. She is predeceased by her parents, Albert G. and Ruth (Anderson) Weber; sisters, Marian Weber and Irene (Lawrence) Cortright; brothers, Howard (Margaret Gridley) Weber and Robert (Marian Maxwell) Weber; first husband, Frank Czarniecki and second husband, Paul Reed. She is survived by her brother, Donald (Joanne Gaulart) Weber; her children, Irene Jane Czarniecki Mohlar (Ralph) and Carl Steven Czarniecki (Betty Marchewka); grandchildren, Steven R. Cortright (Marrell Peard), Jonathan P. Cortright (Erica Mendelsohn), Barbara M.R. (Gregory) Woolever and Christina (George) Lampila; several great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, plus nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star #495, member of the Candor Grange #1466, member of the Home Bureau, Tioga County (Home Demonstration Unit), TOPS Club #565 Van Etten, Readers Club Candor, and the United Methodist Church of Candor. She as a 1937 graduate of Candor Central School. She used her many inherited skills to do various things for her friends and family; such as custom sewing (brides and attendants dresses for several of the lovely weddings of her family and friends), wallpapering, painting, upholstering, and building a new home for her family. She was an entrepreneur who started two businesses. One with her sister, Irene, called the Weber Sister's Art Shoppe, and another called Eleanor's Sewing Room. She also worked in the Candor Glove Shop, The Owego Shoe Factory, The Owego Dress Factory, the National Cash Register Co., the US Postal Service and in her second husband's sawmill. She helped her children build new homes to start their adult lives and provided financial support for some of her grandchildren's first homes. She was good for a batch of Orange frosted cookies, pies, casseroles or cakes for the many bake sales or church suppers, etc. She was a strong woman who was loved and respected by all who knew her and she will be sorely missed. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 1:30pm at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Candor, NY with the Rev. Phil Jordan officiating.
